         Hi, let me tell you a story that, besides being a bit funny, illustrates just how valuable good technical support can be.

    

    A few months ago, I was visiting a workshop where we had sold American-made replacement parts for a Caterpillar 3306 engine. It was one of those old-school shops, with over 40 years of experience and professionals who had seen it all. Despite how busy he was, the head mechanic, Toni (name changed here), took a moment to show me around. 


    He shared a motto of theirs: “We don’t fix anything we haven’t taken apart first; it saves us from a lot of headaches.”

    

    All was in order until we got to the 3306, where my replacement part was installed. I took a closer look and noticed something didn’t add up. I asked him, “Toni, why did you leave out the engine ferrules?”


    He looked at me as if I’d just spoken in another language. “What do you mean? Are you sure they need to be installed?” I held back a laugh and told him yes, and that if he didn’t, the engine would be back in his shop in a couple of weeks.


    “Joaquín, thanks a ton! You’ve saved me from a pricey disaster and an angry client.”

    

    As I was leaving, I said, “Hey, Toni, one thing I don’t get. How did you miss that when taking apart the engine?” He gave me a look that said “you got me” and admitted: “Because it’s a mess I'm sorting out for a friend; he brought it to me completely disassembled… and I couldn’t say no!.”

Are you missing pieces when you open a gasket set? Marta explains why this happens.

            Hi, this is Marta from GMotors. Today I´m going to give you a little advice on gasket sets. Sometimes, when we sell a gasket set to a customer, they call back us saying they are missing some parts... and many times it happens because some of the gaskets are below the cardboards, or even, between them. 

        These is because the manufacturers put them there, so they are well protected, especially the larger ones... so they do not bend or break. They also vacuum pack them so they can last longer. Another thing you should need to know is that normally the different gaskets that you need for each piece are inside a single bag, so for example, here you have all the gaskets necessary for the oil cooler here for the water pump and here for the crankshaft... so that makes the assembly much easier, because when you need to look for a piece you don't have to be looking all around. You can go directly to the bag and you know what you have inside there.

        Please next time you buy a gasket set check carefully under the cardboards, because if not, you could bend a gasket that you're going to need after.         Hola, soy Marta de GMotors. Hoy os voy a dar un pequeño consejo sobre los juegos de juntas. A veces, cuando vendemos un juego de juntas, recibimos una llamada del cliente diciendo que se han perdido algunas piezas... y la respuesta suele ser que las juntas están detrás o entre los cartones de embalaje. 

        Esto es así porque los fabricantes las ponen allí para protegerlas, especialmente las más grandes.... de forma que no se puedan doblar o romper. Suelen estar envasadas al vacío, de forma que duren más. Otra cosa bastante habitual, es que todas las juntas que se utilizan para las diferentes piezas van embaladas en bolsas diferentes. Por favor, la siguiente vez que compres un juego de juntas, verifica cuidadosamente bajo del embalaje de cartón, ya que podrías doblar la junta que necesitarás más tarde.
